ABOUT THE ARRIFLEX BLIII (BL3) CAMERA:
Released in 1980, the Arriflex BLIII is the third silent 35mm film camera to be included in ARRI’s  blimped(BL) camera line. The Arriflex BLIII featured the newly designed ARRI PL mount which isolated camera noise and eliminated the need for lens blimps. Additionally, the BLIII was equipped with a 180* manually adjustable half moon shutter. Arriflex 35BL cameras are rugged, time-tested 35mm workhorse cameras used worldwide for decades. Over the years ARRI Arriflex BLIII cameras were used to shoot notable Hollywood films such as Star Wars Return of the Jedi (1983), The NeverEnding Story (1984), and many more!!

The Benefits of Shooting in 3-Perf:
   – Cost and film‑stock savings: 3‑perf uses about 25% less film per frame than 4‑perf, which directly lowers the cost of            both film stock and lab processing. Because less film runs through the gate, a given roll lasts longer; for example, a            400′ roll can give about 5–6 minutes of runtime in 3‑perf instead of roughly 4¼ minutes in 4‑perf.

   – Longer roll times means cameras can roll longer without reloading, which is helpful for long takes, golden‑hour work,          and remote‑location shoots.

    – Less film moving per second also tends to make the camera run quieter, which can simplify sound recording compared
       to a faster-running 4-perf camera.

The LEGENDARY CLAIRMONT CAMERA:
This Arriflex BLIII camera was converted to 3-perf by Clairmont Camera in Hollywood, California. Clairmont Camera was a world-famous camera rental company and one of Arri’s biggest customers. Never ones to “leave well-enough alone,” Clairmont’s technicians would often improve upon Arri’s designs after receiving the equipment from Arriflex. With Clairmont’s size & reputation, the rental house had the financial backing and the staff needed to keep their equipment in excellent condition. Right up until the day Clairmont closed its doors in 2017 (when its co-founder Denny Clairmont retired), the rental house was known for having the most innovative and best-maintained equipment in the industry. Clairmont played such a big role in the film camera world that Arri would consult with the company during development of new camera designs. When the motion picture industry shifted to HD/Widescreen, Clairmont was quick to realize the advantage that 3-perforation acquisition offered and began converting existing BL4 and BL3 cameras to 3-perf.
