The Moviecam SL is a lightweight, professional 35mm motion picture film camera designed for high-end cinematic production, known for its robust construction, quiet operation, and precision engineering. It features a reflex viewing system with a high-resolution optical viewfinder for accurate framing, a precision shutter for low-noise performance, and stepless variable speed control typically ranging from 1 to 60 frames per second. The camera supports interchangeable PL-mount lenses and a modular accessory system, allowing seamless integration with matte boxes, follow focus units, external magazines, and Steadicam-style rigs. Its reliable film transport ensures smooth, consistent motion, making it suitable for studio, handheld, and location shooting.
Originally developed by Moviecam in Austria during the late 1980s, the Moviecam SL quickly gained a reputation for combining the reliability of studio cameras with the flexibility of portable systems. The brand later became part of ARRI, and many design principles from Moviecam cameras went on to influence subsequent generations of ARRI film and digital cinema cameras– the Moviecam SL essentially became the Arricam LT after Arriflex purchased Moviecam and used much of the SL camera’s design in the design of the Arricam LT.

The modular design of the Moviecam SL makes it possible for the camera to use the optical top from a Moviecam Compact camera. The Compact optical top enables the use of an eyepiece extension, anamorphic viewing options and digital footage and camera speed readouts. Camera powering options: The Moviecam SL is a 24 volt camera. We can provide the camera with a 3-pin XLR power cable for powering from a single 24 volt power source, or we can provide a 4-pin Y-Cable that enables the camera to be powered from two 12-volt batteries (combining the batteries into a 24-volt source).
